Ammonia NH3 At room temperature and atmospheric pressure ammonia is a colorless and alkaline gas having a pungent odor. Ammonia desolves readily in water.

Features:

  • Airgas operates its own dedicated blending facilities as well as maintains a national network of blending technology to ensure accurate, consistent production.

Caution:

  • Always use in accordance with the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)
  • Becomes extremely corrosive and will vigorously attack copper, silver, zinc, and their alloys in the presence of moisture.
  • Combines with silver or mercury to form explosive compounds.
  • Cylinder must be stored and used in an upright, secured position in a well-ventilated or monitored area.
  • Always follow local fire code requirements when storing cylinder of flammable, oxidizer, or toxic gases.
  • Major Hazards: Inhalation hazard; Body contact causes severe burns.
  • Since ammonia is extremely soluble in aqueous solutions, a trap or check valve should be used to prevent suck back of materials into the cylinder. Suckback can cause an extremely corrosive condition to from within a cylinder, aside from the possibility of having a violent reaction take place within the cylinder.

Application:

  • Ammonia (NH)3: Electronic grade ammonia is used as an etching gas in semiconductor manufacturing. It also can be mixed with silane to make silicon nitride. Anhydrous ammonia is used in pharmaceutical production, metal treating, organic synthesis and as a refrigerant gas.
